How Your AC System Works

The air conditioning system is more complex, since it has four major components to it. The compressor pressurizes the refrigerant, converting it into a hot gas. A condenser cools that gas to turn it into a liquid form. The liquid runs through an expansion valve that turns it back into a gas, but a low pressure one. Lastly, the evaporator uses a fan to quickly cool the low-pressure gas down, resulting in the cold air that blows through the air vents and into your passenger space.

Heating is much simpler. Hot coolant gets drawn out of the engine and into a heater core. A front-mounted fan blows air over the core fins, directing warm air into the cabin.

Eventually, though, the HVAC system can begin to struggle to produce either cold or warm air as needed. Maybe the seals have weakened, or hoses have become too degraded with age. Whatever the cause, you'll want to repair the issue promptly in order to remain comfortable.
